AI Boosts Software Engineering Productivity by 32.6%, According to Economic Model

As coding tools like Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex reshape software development, companies are pouring billions into AI subscriptions and infrastructure. But is this massive investment truly paying off?

A working paper by economists from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), titled Macroeconomic Effects of Artificial Intelligence: Scaling the Software Engineering Channel, attempts to answer this by analyzing how AI-driven news impacts stock prices across firms heavily reliant on software engineers.

The Methodology and Findings

  • Market-Based Measurement: The researchers developed a complex mathematical model measuring how fluctuations in AI-related stock prices reflect on other companies based on their software engineering headcount. The core hypothesis: if AI genuinely boosts productivity, firms heavily dependent on software engineering should see higher expected profits and corresponding stock price gains.
  • The 32.6% Boost: By feeding market reactions into their model, the economists calculated that from November 2022 to December 2025, AI raised market expectations for software engineering productivity by a permanent equivalent of 32.6%.
  • A Strategic Benchmark: While this financial market consensus does not guarantee that every individual developer is immediately more efficient, it provides organizations with a vital baseline for allocating software budgets, justifying tool expenditures, and planning future AI integrations.
