Tesla partners with Turo to promote the adoption of Full Self-Driving (Supervised)

Car rental giant Turo will begin highlighting which Tesla vehicles on its platform are equipped with the automaker’s advanced driver-assistance system—Full Self-Driving (Supervised), or FSD—a partnership that could further boost the adoption of this driving software.

Eligible Turo hosts who list their vehicles on the platform can receive a one-month free trial of FSD. Turo stated that it is working with Tesla to access the automaker’s API directly, allowing it to verify which vehicles have FSD enabled.

The announcement comes just days after Tesla released new data showing that the company has finally gained a larger base of paying users for the software, which can handle most driving tasks but still requires human supervision.

Last week, Tesla revealed that approximately 1.7 million customers globally have paid for FSD, out of the more than 10 million vehicles the company has produced and sold to date. Tesla noted that over 75% of customers who took delivery of their vehicles in North America during the third quarter opted for FSD. This represents an increase of about 20% compared to the second quarter, even as Tesla’s overall sales in the U.S. have continued to decline.

Over the past year, Tesla has invested significant effort into revamping some of its showrooms to place greater emphasis on FSD as a key selling point. In a blog post last week, CEO Elon Musk indicated that this strategy is paying off.

“People are buying the car to get FSD, rather than the other way around,” Musk wrote.

During an earnings call last week, Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja remarked, “Customers are now coming in and asking, ‘Can I experience FSD?’ They’re no longer just asking to buy a Model 3, Model Y, or Cybertruck.”

For Turo, the addition of FSD-equipped vehicles offers an opportunity to further drive rentals for some of its most popular models. According to Turo, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y rank as the third and fourth most popular vehicles on its platform this year. “As interest in autonomous driving technology continues to grow, this integration will further expand income opportunities for vehicle owners,” Turo stated.

In a statement, Turo CEO Andre Haddad remarked: “This industry-first partnership with Tesla further demonstrates how Turo is redefining car rental and mobility. Most travelers have limited opportunities to experience driver-assistance technology, yet the market demand is clear. Our own research indicates that 55% of Americans are interested in autonomous mobility technology—a figure that rises to 71% among Gen Z. Turo’s platform model is uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between consumer curiosity and actual hands-on experience.”

Customers who rent a Tesla equipped with FSD (Full Self-Driving) capabilities through Turo will be presented with a warning, instructing them to monitor the software and remain prepared to take control of the vehicle at any time. Drivers will also have the option to watch tutorials created by Tesla.

A screenshot from the Turo app states: “With this feature enabled, your vehicle will take you almost anywhere under your active supervision, requiring minimal human intervention.”

Meanwhile, according to another screenshot provided by Turo, vehicle owners can market their cars as “self-driving cars” in their vehicle listings.
